centuries are evident records of socio/cultural evolution and lifestyle.
Fashion communication has within metaphorical and literal connotations
of our active societies.

and read between the lines of many bombarding fashion editorials and adds.

Questions like these will be revealed at your hand, but come along with
eyes wide open, for some branding strategies will shock you!

Course Description

This course teaches students to understand the underlying notions behind
media in communicating fashion statements and socio/cultural changes.
In analyzing fashion ads and commercials students will also record a
certain brand image questions such as: what is this brand communicating?
How does it achieve that? Who is it communicating to?
Does it reflect a current trend? What is its philosophy? and many others
will be answered. The course will highlight differences and similarities
between brands through their ads, in doing so the course will consider the
trends of communication, so not only the trends in fashion, but
communication being a very essential part of branding and innovation. 

Student Outcomes

The students will learn the fundamental techniques in order to research,
select and comprehend the necessary information to communicate a
fashion brand and to stylize a photo-shoot.

This course will look into the history of fashion communication briefly.
Each class will research a certain period of time. Magazines such as I-D
will be explored as a reflection to fashion movements and identity. Identity
will be an essential aspect of every class trying to constantly discover the
identity of Dubai through its media communication.

The course is interactive and practical, where each student will create
his/her own portfolio of fashion ads. At a later stage each student picks a
certain theme within current trends to research and reflect through his/her
collection of images.

The second stage of this course will be focusing on styling a photo-shoot,
applying the research done during the first phase in creating a storyboard
for a photo-shoot. Students at this stage could work individually or in
groups to stylize their own photo-shoot. It will be advised that students
should first pick an existing brand and place themselves as its art director.
This will allow students to focus or a certain brand image.

The final stage of this course will be purely practical. Students will execute
their photo-shoots using media tools of their choice. Students will be
involved in producing a photo-shoot the way it happens in a real fashion
industry.
